Challenge
Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) was looking to update their digital literacy program, MyFIT (Middle Years Focus on Information Technology), for Gr. 6-8 educators and students across Canada. To ensure that students gained the appropriate future-ready skills required for today’s workplace, the program needed to be hands-on and engaging. Selected teachers into the MyFIT program would be provided with the resources and support in order to deliver the outcomes designed for this program.
Solution
In partnership with the ICTC team, Logics Academy analyzed resources and results from an earlier pilot program and provided recommendations and improvements to modernize the material and teacher activities. A new device-based stream was developed where teachers and students used the solution CyberPi – a single-board computer fully packed with advanced electronic sensors, actuators, and communication modules – to learn about programming.
The MyFIT program was broken up into 3 cohorts where teachers from across Canada applied to be part of a cohort. Each accepted educator gained access to 5-10 hours of teaching content, a classroom set of technology, training, ongoing community support and more.
Results
Logics and ICTC launched the MyFIT program in April 2023 and concluded in March 2024. There were 100 educators from across Canada that participated in the program with approximately 4,600 students engaged. Upon completion of the program, students received custom MyFIT certificates that they will use for their career portfolios in the future. Students are now also eligible to participate in the Focus on Information Technology (FIT) program, targeted towards high school learners.
