The Curriculum Has Evolved. The Power of Play Remains. 

Ontario's updated Kindergarten curriculum introduces clearer expectations for literacy, mathematics, and problem solving while maintaining play-based learning. Educators are now tasked with building foundational skills, including coding, computational thinking, and number sense, through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

Play-based learning remains central rather than being replaced by direct instruction. Inquiry-based learning and the whole-child approach also continue, giving children opportunities to explore, question, investigate, communicate, and learn through meaningful experiences.
expectations are now much clearer and more systematic. Kindergarten students will develop phonemic awareness, phonics, early spelling and word-reading skills, and increasingly fluent reading of short sentences. Educators are expected to intentionally combine this instruction with hands-on and play-based learning.
The curriculum adds or strengthens expectations in mathematics, coding, financial literacy, Indigenous perspectives, and early intervention. This includes a broader number range, recall of number facts, coding concepts, financial literacy, integration of First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives, and required early reading screening in Year 2.
